If your last bill was close to 500, watch the meter: subtract the reading on your last bill from today's reading. A 1,000-watt appliance running one hour a day uses about 60 units over a two-month bill, so one habit can decide which side of the line you land on. The rated watts are on the appliance's label.

How to read your TNEB bill

Bill does not match? Check the reading dates and the reading itself: a late meter reading or a wrong reading can explain it.

Questions people ask
How is the TNEB bill calculated?
Take the units used over the two-month bill period. Each block of units is charged at its own rate (the slab system), and only the units inside a block pay that block's rate. Up to 500 units, the first 200 are free, 201 to 400 cost ₹4.70 each and 401 to 500 cost ₹6.30 each. There is no fixed charge for homes.
Who gets 200 free units in Tamil Nadu?
Every domestic (LT-IA) connection that uses 500 units or less in a two-month bill, from 10 May 2026 under G.O.(Ms) No. 50 dated 10 May 2026. Above 500 units, the first 100 units stay free. TNERC Order 5 of 2026 ties the benefit to two-month consumption only and mentions no application or form.
Why does my bill jump after 500 units?
At 501 units the free units drop from 200 to 100, so units 101 to 200 are charged at ₹4.70 each. That alone adds ₹470, and the 501st unit adds ₹8.40: ₹1,570 at 500 units becomes ₹2,048.40 at 501. More causes of a high bill, and how to complain: why is my TNEB bill so high?
How much does 1 unit of electricity cost in Tamil Nadu?
It depends on your slab. For a home using up to 500 units in two months, the first 200 units are free, the next 200 cost ₹4.70 each and units 401 to 500 cost ₹6.30 each. Above 500 units, rates rise to ₹11.55 a unit above 1,000. One unit is one kilowatt-hour.
Should I enter monthly or two-monthly units?
Two-monthly. TNEB bills every two months and the slabs are set for two months. If you only know one month's units, double them for an estimate. Do not halve a two-month bill to get a monthly one: because of the slabs, half the units cost much less than half the bill.
Are fixed charges or electricity tax in the calculator?
The fixed charge for homes is nil under TNERC Tariff Order 6 of 2025. A 2024 domestic TNEB bill we checked showed electricity tax at ₹0, so the calculator adds none. Your real bill can still include arrears, a late-payment penalty or adjustments, which this calculator cannot know.
TNEB, TANGEDCO or TNPDCL: who sends my bill?
TNEB is the name most people still use. Bills now come from TNPDCL, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation; older bills carry the TANGEDCO name. The rates are set by TNERC, the state regulator.
When will TNEB rates change next?
Tariff Order 6 of 2025 provided for an inflation-based adjustment from 1 July 2026. As of 22 Oct 2026, TNERC has issued no tariff order for 2026-27. What households pay is the Tariff Order 6 of 2025 rate less the state subsidy set in Order 4 of 2026, with the 200 free units added by Order 5 of 2026. We check the TNERC list every month and update this page the day anything changes.
