How to calculate your electricity bill

The formula is simple: units in each slab, times that slab's rate, added up. Then the fixed charge and any duty go on top. Step by step:

  1. Units used. Current meter reading minus the previous one.
  2. Slabs. Your board splits those units into blocks, each with its own rate.
  3. Free units and limits. Some states give free units; cross a limit and the rules change.
  4. Fixed charge. Nil for Tamil Nadu homes; in other states it depends on your load or slab.
  5. Duty and surcharges. Added last where your state charges them.

Bill higher than expected?

  • You crossed a slab line, so more units fall in dearer slabs. In Tamil Nadu, crossing 500 units also halves your free units.
  • The bill carries arrears, an adjustment or a late-payment penalty from an earlier bill.
  • You used more this period: summer cooling is the usual reason.
  • The meter was read late, so the bill covers more than 60 days.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my electricity bill?

Subtract the previous meter reading from the current one to get units. Charge each block of units at its slab rate, then add the fixed charge and any duty your state applies. The calculator above does this for Tamil Nadu homes, line by line.

How many kWh is 1 unit of electricity?

Exactly one. A unit on your bill is one kilowatt-hour: a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour.

What is an EB bill calculator?

An EB (electricity board) bill calculator works out your electricity bill from the units you used, using your board's slab rates, free units and charges. This one also shows every line of the bill and the order each rate comes from.

Can I calculate my bill from the meter reading?

Yes. Choose "Meter readings" in the calculator and enter the previous and current readings from your meter or bill. The difference is your units for the period.

Which states can I calculate?

Tamil Nadu (TNEB) now, and Uttar Pradesh homes supplied by UPPCL: see the UPPCL bill calculator. Maharashtra homes supplied by MSEDCL: see the MSEDCL bill calculator. Gujarat homes supplied by PGVCL, DGVCL, MGVCL or UGVCL: see the Gujarat electricity bill calculator.

Kerala and Karnataka are next. We publish a state only after its rates are checked against the regulator's order. If a charge comes from an official calculator instead, the page says so.
