Why check the official list
TNPDCL's page is where the planned shutdowns are published. Two news lists we read credit TNPDCL or the electricity board: one says shutdowns happen as TNPDCL "undertakes routine maintenance work", another gives its list "as per the latest TNEB update".
A copy is only as current as the day it was made, and some pages that come up for "power cut today" show lists from earlier years. Check the date on any list, and check TNPDCL's page when a date or area matters.

The rules on planned shutdowns
| Situation | What TNERC's rules say |
|---|---|
| Planned shutdown for maintenance | TNPDCL may switch off supply for testing or maintenance. For a planned shutdown it will, wherever possible, give advance notice and notify it through local newspapers. |
| Which areas | The details of scheduled outages must be given to consumers with a specific mention of the areas affected. |
| Unplanned outage or fault | TNPDCL must tell consumers straight away by SMS or another electronic way, with an estimated time for the power to come back. The same information should be with its call centre. |
How long TNPDCL has to restore supply after a breakdown, and the compensation when it is late, are in our complaint guide.
