TNEB bill status: how to check, download and pay your bill

To check your TNEB bill status, open TNPDCL's Bill Status page and type two numbers: your service connection number and the mobile number registered with TNPDCL. It shows your bill status: payments, deposits, billing cycle and tariff. Your bill also comes to that mobile by SMS, and you can download it as a PDF from TNPDCL's e-Invoice page. (TNEB is the name most people still use; bills now come from TNPDCL, and older ones carry the TANGEDCO name.)

TNEB bill status in short

  • TNPDCL's Bill Status page shows your TNEB bill status, including payments, deposits, billing cycle and tariff. It needs your service connection number and the mobile number registered with TNPDCL.
  • Your bill also comes as an SMS to your registered mobile. Under the Supply Code, that message counts as your bill and your notice to pay.
  • Download the bill as a PDF on TNPDCL's e-Invoice page (bills from October 2023), and a payment receipt on its e-Receipt page.
  • A tenant can register a mobile number only with a one-time code that also goes to the owner's registered mobile. If the owner's number is wrong or missing, it must be fixed first.
  • TNPDCL says messages claiming your power will be cut tonight because your last bill was "not updated", with a number to call, are not from it. Pay only through the ways TNPDCL lists.

Find your TNEB consumer number

Every TNEB bill page asks for it, under one of three names: consumer number, service connection number or service number. They all mean the number of your connection.

Where you see itWhat it is called
The bill SMS"SC No.", in a message giving the amount, the number and the last date to pay
The paper receipt"Consumer No". It is also printed in groups, such as 05-170-004-1454. The first two digits are your region.
The white meter cardThe service number, written in groups; TNPDCL's example: 5 - 5 - 5 is entered as 0050055.
An online e-receipt"Service No"

If online registration says "invalid consumer number", TNPDCL's advice is to check that the connection shows as live in the bill status, and whether a new number has been given to it. A tenant who does not have the number can ask the owner, or read it off the white meter card.

Register or change your mobile number for TNEB bills

Bill Status, the e-Invoice page and the bill SMS all depend on the mobile number TNPDCL has on record. Billing messages go only to that number. To add or change it, use TNPDCL's Consumer Contact page, where you can also remove a number, add more numbers and check which are registered.

Who you areWhat you do
The connection is in your nameChoose Owner and upload ID proof. The Area Engineer (the engineer in charge of your area) checks it and then updates the number. If you also live there, choose the "owner cum occupant" option.
You rent or live there, not the ownerChoose Occupant. A one-time code goes to your mobile and to the owner's registered mobile; both are checked. If the owner's number is wrong or missing, you cannot update yours until the owner's is fixed.

What the TNEB bill status report shows

The bill SMS gives the amount, your number and the last date to pay. The Supply Code treats that message as your bill and your notice to pay. Pay by that date: after it, a late payment surcharge is added (see late payment charges).

The bill status report has two sections worth knowing:

  • Monthly Consumption Charge Collection Details: each bill and payment. The Advance Amount column shows how much of any advance payment was used against that bill.
  • Miscellaneous Collection Details (other payments): "48100-Cc Deposit" lists what you have paid towards your deposit, and Pending Amt shows advance money not yet used.
units

Opens our TNEB bill calculator, which works the bill out slab by slab from TNERC's rates.

If the units look too high, read your meter and compare: the meter reading guide shows how, and why is my bill high covers the usual causes.

TNEB bill reading details: where to see them

The reading is the number on your meter when the reader came. Your units are this reading minus the last one. You can see it in three places:

WhereWhat you see
The white meter cardUnder the Supply Code, the reading, the units and the charges should be written on it at each reading.
The official TNEB appYour usage, and your bills to view and download.
Your meterThe number on the screen marked kWh. Subtract the reading on your last bill to see the units used since.

The Supply Code also says TNPDCL must text the bill amount and due date within four working days of the reading, and keep at least a year of your bills on its website. To read the meter yourself and check the reading, see how to read your TNEB meter.

TNEB online payment: pay your bill safely

TNPDCL lists these as the ways to pay a low-tension (home, shop or small business) bill: section office counters, Tamil Nadu e-Seva centres, TNPDCL's website and app (net banking, cards, UPI and QR code), BBPS apps (the national Bharat Bill Pay system, inside GPay, PhonePe, Paytm and bank apps), NEFT or RTGS, and the state's Namma Arasu WhatsApp service. It asks people not to pay through any other agent, app or website.

If a BBPS payment fails or does not show, TNPDCL says to complain through the Complaints option in your bank's BBPS menu, or to bharatbillpay.com to reach the company that took the payment. If a payment on TNPDCL's own site shows an error but the money left your account, do not pay again. TNPDCL says the payment is matched up automatically within three working days, and a registered user gets the receipt by email. The online payment service is down for maintenance from Saturday 23:30 to Sunday 00:30.

Fake disconnection messages. TNPDCL warns that messages saying your power will be cut tonight because your last bill was "not updated", asking you to contact a number or send a payment screenshot, are not from it. Do not reply or pay.

TNEB bill not showing, unpaid or wrong: what to do

What you seeWhat it usually means, and what to do
No bill SMSBilling messages go only to the registered number, so it may not be yours: it can be the owner's or a family member's. Check and update it on the Consumer Contact page.
"Previous assessment not done"No bill has been worked out for this cycle and the one before. You cannot pay, or pay in advance, until the section office enters the reading. Contact the section office, or use Consumer Complaints under Reach Us on tnpdcl.org.
"Invalid consumer number" when registeringCheck the connection shows as live in the bill status, and whether a new number has been given to it.
Paid on TNPDCL's site, but it shows unpaidDo not pay twice. TNPDCL says the payment is matched up within three working days. Look at your bank statement and keep any receipt.
The units or the amount look wrongRead your meter, check the amount with the calculator above, and complain. While the dispute is open, your supply cannot be cut if you pay "under protest" (paying while saying you disagree) the amount billed, or your average monthly bill over the last six months if that is less.

What people report

No bill for months

One household went five months without a bill and was told the connection had been given a new consumer number. The bill status, checked with the old and the new number, can show which one is live.

Bill messages going to a parent's phone

One person found the registered number was their father's, so the bill messages went there. Update it on the Consumer Contact page.

Money debited, bill not shown as paid

The advice given in one thread was to check the bill status and wait 48 hours. TNPDCL's own figure for payments on its site is three working days.

Questions people ask

How do I check my TNEB bill with my consumer number?

On TNPDCL's Bill Status page you now need your service connection number and the mobile number registered with TNPDCL. With only the consumer number, Quick Pay on tnebnet.org lets you pay. The bill also comes by SMS to your registered number.

How do I check my TNEB bill if my mobile number is not registered?

Register it on TNPDCL's Consumer Contact page (tnebltd.gov.in/mobilenoentry). An owner uploads ID proof, and the Area Engineer approves it. A tenant gets a one-time code on their own mobile and on the owner's, so the owner's number must be on record first.

What is my TNEB consumer number?

The number of your electricity connection. It is on the bill SMS as "SC No.", on your paper receipt as "Consumer No", and on an e-receipt as "Service No". On the receipt it is also printed in groups, for example 05-170-004-1454, and the first two digits are your region.

How do I download my TNEB bill as a PDF?

Use TNPDCL's e-Invoice page (tnebnet.org/awp/einvoice). Enter your consumer number, registered mobile number and the bill month as MMYYYY, and choose English or Tamil. Bills from October 2023 onwards can be downloaded.

How do I download a TNEB payment receipt?

On TNPDCL's e-Receipt page (tnebnet.org/awp/ereceipt), type three things from the payment: the consumer number, the receipt number and the payment date.

My payment went through but the bill still shows unpaid. What do I do?

Do not pay again. For a payment on its own site, TNPDCL says a broken transaction is matched up automatically within three working days, and a registered user gets the receipt by email. For a BBPS payment (through GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or a bank app), TNPDCL points you to the Complaints option in your bank's BBPS menu, or to bharatbillpay.com to reach the company that took the payment.

Is the message saying my power will be disconnected tonight real?

No. TNPDCL warns on its own payment page that messages saying your supply will be cut tonight because the last bill was not updated, with a number to call or send a payment screenshot to, are not from it. Pay only through the ways TNPDCL lists: its website and app, BBPS apps, section office counters, e-Seva centres, NEFT or RTGS, and the state's Namma Arasu WhatsApp service.
