Rates from TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025, 30 Jun 2025 and TNERC Order No. 4 of 2026, 27 Apr 2026. Every bill amount up to 50 kW matched against the TNPDCL bill calculator on 22 Oct 2026.

One unit past 100 adds ₹420 to a two-month bill. One unit past 500 adds ₹169. Shops get no free units.

The state subsidy of ₹0.20 or ₹0.30 a unit was approved up to 30 June 2026. TNPDCL's calculator still applied it on 22 Oct 2026; check the CC Subsidy line on your own bill.

In short

  • A Tamil Nadu shop on the LT-V commercial tariff pays one rate for all its units: ₹6.45 a unit at 100 units or less in two months, ₹10.15 from 101 to 500, and ₹10.45 above 500.
  • Going from 100 to 101 units in two months adds ₹420 to a shop's TNEB bill, because every unit moves to the higher rate.
  • Going from 500 to 501 units adds ₹169, because the state subsidy for shops stops above 500 units.
  • A shop also pays ₹110 per kW a month, 25% extra on a fifth of its units for peak hours, and 5% electricity tax. All in, a 2 kW shop using 200 to 2,000 units in two months pays about ₹11.74 to ₹13.41 a unit.

What is the commercial EB bill for 300 units?

₹3,802 for a 2 kW shop, two-month bill: ₹3,045 for the units at ₹10.15, plus peak extra, fixed charge and tax.

And for 500 units?

₹6,043 at 2 kW, or ₹6,263 at 3 kW. At 501 units the 2 kW bill is ₹6,212.

And for 1,000 units?

₹11,961 at 2 kW, or ₹12,621 at 5 kW. Above 500 units there is no subsidy, so every unit is ₹10.45.

TNEB shop bill by units used A 2 kW shop's two-month bill jumps by ₹420 between 100 and 101 units, then rises steadily, and jumps again by ₹169 between 500 and 501 units. ₹0₹3,000₹6,000₹9,0000100200300400500600700+₹420 at 101+₹169 at 501
Two jumps, not slabs. A 2 kW shop's two-month TNEB bill, everything included. Past 100 units every unit moves to the higher rate; past 500 the state subsidy stops. Units used in two months along the bottom. Worked from TNERC Tariff Order 6 of 2025 and Order 4 of 2026.

The 100-unit jump

Home bills are mostly worked slab by slab. Shop bills are not. Use 100 units or less in two months and every unit is at the lower rate; use 101 and every unit, including the first 100, is at the higher one.

₹1,152100 units
₹1,572101 units
₹420for 1 unit more

That is a 2 kW shop; the jump is the same ₹420 at any load. It matters most to a small stall, office or clinic that runs close to 100 units. A 100-watt load, about two ceiling fans, running 10 hours a day uses about 60 units over two months.

The 500-unit line

Up to 500 units in two months, the state pays ₹0.30 of every unit's ₹10.45. At 501 that stops for the whole bill, so ₹6,043 at 500 units becomes ₹6,212 at 501. Smaller than the jump at 100, but it comes back on every bill that lands just over the line.

The state promised no rise in the energy rate for shops up to 500 units in two months, for one year from 1 July 2025 (TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025, 30 Jun 2025, page 12). The fixed charge and the peak extra still went up.

The peak-hour extra

Shops pay 25% more for units used from 6 to 10 AM and 6 to 10 PM, and 5% less from 10 PM to 5 AM. That needs a time-of-day meter, which records when you use power. Until one is fitted, TNPDCL adds 25% on a fifth of all your units instead, which TNPDCL's calculator shows as "Peak Charges". On a 2 kW shop using 300 units, it is ₹156.78 a bill.

You can ask TNPDCL for a time-of-day meter. The tariff order says it must fit one within 15 days, or let you buy and supply your own. Whether it saves you money depends on your hours: a shop that is mostly shut in the morning and evening peaks would pay less than the flat fifth, and one that does most of its trade in the evening could pay more.

TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025, 30 Jun 2025, para 3.2.1 (c) to (e), page 32.

Which connections are billed as commercial

The LT-V tariff covers any low-tension connection that is not a home, a farm, an industry or another named category. The tariff order lists, among others:

  • Shops, bakeries, sweet stalls, xerox shops, beauty parlours, photo studios and internet centres.
  • Offices of lawyers, auditors, doctors and other professionals; clinics, labs and scan centres; banks and private offices.
  • Hotels, lodges, home stays and paying-guest rooms in separate premises; gyms, marriage halls and petrol bunks.
  • Common lighting, lifts and water pumps of an apartment building where commercial or other non-home use is more than 25% of the built-up area.

That last rule can be challenged. In a 2023 Ombudsman case reprinted by the consumer group CAG, an owners' association whose common facilities were billed at the commercial rate argued that they took up less than 25% of the built-up area. TANGEDCO (now TNPDCL) refused to change the tariff. The grievance forum ordered a move to the residential common-supply tariff (LT-ID), and the Ombudsman ordered a refund of the excess charged during the delay (Min Seithigal, Citizen consumer and civic Action Group, July 2023, page 5).

Why other calculators give a different number

We checked the shop calculators that rank for this search. The common mistakes:

  • One flat rate for every shop. The rate depends on your units: ₹6.45, ₹10.15 or ₹10.45.
  • No state subsidy. Up to 500 units, the bill takes off ₹0.20 or ₹0.30 a unit.
  • No peak extra. It is on every shop bill until a time-of-day meter is fitted.
  • Tax on the fixed charge. The 5% is worked on the energy part only.

We ran the same bills through TNPDCL's own calculator on 22 Oct 2026: 13 bills, from 50 to 3,000 units and 1 to 15 kW, monthly and two-monthly. Every line matched to the paisa.

How to lower a shop's TNEB bill

  1. Watch the two lines. If your two-month bills land just over 100 or 500 units, a small cut takes off ₹420 or ₹169. Read the meter mid-cycle: today's reading minus the one on your last bill.
  2. Check your sanctioned load. Each kW costs ₹1,320 a year in fixed charges whether you use it or not. If the load on your bill is far above what you run, ask your section office about reducing it.
  3. Think about a time-of-day meter if your shop is mostly shut from 6 to 10 AM and 6 to 10 PM.
  4. Keep the power factor up on a three-phase connection. Below 0.85, TNPDCL adds 1% of the energy charge for every 0.01 short, and 1.5% for every 0.01 below 0.85 once it falls under 0.75. Capacitors usually fix it.

Questions people ask

How is a commercial EB bill calculated in Tamil Nadu?

Take the units for the bill period. If they are 100 or less in two months, every unit is charged ₹6.65; above 100, every unit is charged ₹10.45. Up to 500 units the state takes off ₹0.20 or ₹0.30 a unit. Add a peak-hour extra of 25% on a fifth of the units, a fixed charge of ₹110 per kW a month, and electricity tax of 5% on the energy part. The total is rounded to the rupee.

What is the commercial electricity rate per unit in Tamil Nadu?

₹6.45 a unit if your shop uses 100 units or less in two months, ₹10.15 from 101 to 500 units and ₹10.45 above 500, after the state subsidy. These are the rates the shop pays on every unit, not just the units above a line. Counting the fixed charge, peak extra and tax, a 2 kW shop using 200 to 2,000 units pays about ₹11.74 to ₹13.41 a unit all in.

Do shops get free units like homes?

No. The 100 and 200 free units are for domestic (LT-IA) connections only. A shop pays for every unit from the first.

What is the fixed charge for a 1 kW or 2 kW shop?

₹110 a kW a month up to 50 kW, so ₹220 on a two-month bill for 1 kW and ₹440 for 2 kW. Part of a kW counts as a whole one: 2.5 kW is charged as 3 kW, ₹660 a bill. Above 50 kW the charge is ₹332 a kW a month, and above 112 kW ₹608.

Why is there a peak charge on my shop bill?

Tariff Order 6 of 2025 adds 25% to the energy rate for units used from 6 to 10 AM and 6 to 10 PM. Until a time-of-day meter is fitted, TNPDCL charges that 25% on a fifth of all your units, whatever hours you actually keep. You can ask TNPDCL to fit a time-of-day meter; the order says it must do so within 15 days, or let you buy and supply one.

Is electricity tax charged on a shop bill?

Yes. TNPDCL's own calculator adds 5% of the energy charge plus the peak extra, less the subsidy. The fixed charge is not taxed. The state law allows 5% to 10% of the consumption charge, at the rate the government notifies.

Will shop rates change in 2026?

Tariff Order 6 of 2025 provided for an inflation-based revision from 1 July 2026; as of 22 Oct 2026, we found no tariff order for 2026-27 on the TNERC list or in the news. The state subsidy for shops up to 500 units was approved by Order 4 of 2026 up to 30 June 2026. TNPDCL's calculator was still applying it on 22 Oct 2026, and we found no order that ends it. We check the TNERC list every month.
