TNEB HT bill: where to check it, how it is worked out, and how to pay
A TNEB HT bill is for a connection supplied at 11,000 volts or more. HT I to IV bills charge ₹608 per kVA of demand a month: the month's highest 15-minute reading, or 90% of the demand agreed with TNPDCL if that is higher, plus energy. TNPDCL has an HT Consumer Details page; we have not seen what it shows.

90 kVA because 80 kVA recorded is less than 90% of 100 kVA. Power factor 0.95: no compensation charge.
Rates and rules: TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025, 30 Jun 2025, page 18 and paras 3.1.1.6 to 3.1.1.10. Tariff charges only: tax, arrears and other items on the bill are not included.
TNEB HT bill, in short
- A TNEB HT (high tension) connection is supplied at 11,000 volts or more, and TNPDCL labels it above 150 kW (kilowatts). TNPDCL's HT Consumer Details page asks for district, circle and HT service number; we have not seen what it shows.
- HT I to IV bills charge ₹608 per kVA a month on the month's highest recorded demand or 90% of the contracted demand, whichever is higher, plus energy from ₹7.50 a unit (HT I) to ₹13.25 (HT IV). HT V, for EV charging, is ₹304 per kVA a month.
- On HT I, IIA (not lift irrigation), IIB and III bills, energy used from 6 to 10 am and 6 to 10 pm costs 25% extra and energy from 10 pm to 5 am gets 5% off. On any HT bill, an average power factor below 0.90 adds a charge.
- An HT payment above ₹1,000 must go by RTGS, NEFT or online transfer. If an HT bill is still unpaid 15 days after its due date, the supply will be disconnected unless TNPDCL gives more time on your application.
Where to check your HT bill and its status
TNPDCL (formerly TANGEDCO, the TNEB company that supplies and bills you) has one page built for HT consumers: HT Consumer Details. For your HT bill status, start there: pick your district and circle, enter your HT service number (the page's note says the last 4 digits) and press View Consumer details.
We have not seen what it shows for a service number. If your bill is not there, ask the TNPDCL office for your circle (the area you pick on the HT page).
TNPDCL's other bill pages, Bill Status, e-Invoice, e-Receipt and Quick Pay, ask for a consumer number and do not mention HT. The HT links on TNPDCL's Online Services page (HT service connection, additional load, reduction of load, temporary, rooftop solar) all go to one HT login. Its sign-in page speaks of applying for load addition and reduction, and does not say whether it shows bills.
The Supply Code, the rules for supply and billing set by TNERC (the state electricity regulator), sets what TNPDCL must do: send an HT consumer an SMS or mail as soon as the bill is sent, with the amount and due date; upload every bill on its website on the day it is generated; and keep at least the last year of bills and payments there.
For a supply problem, the HT Consumer Details page lists 94987 94987 as its Power Support Line, the same number TNPDCL gives for Minnagam, its 24-hour centre: see TNEB complaint. For an LT (low tension) bill, see TNEB bill status.

How an HT bill is worked out
An HT bill has two main parts: a demand charge on kVA, and an energy charge on units. Demand is measured in kVA (kilovolt-amperes). Your maximum demand is the highest average kVA your meter records over any 15 minutes in the month. Your contracted demand is the kVA agreed with TNPDCL for your connection.
The rates are the 2025-26 ones. Tariff Order 6 of 2025 provides for an inflation adjustment from 1 July 2026, but no order applying it had been published by 30 Oct 2026, and TNPDCL's tariff page still lists the 2025 order.
| Tariff | Demand charge, per kVA a month | Energy, per unit |
|---|---|---|
| HT I: industries, factories, IT services | ₹608 | ₹7.50 |
| HT IIA (not lift irrigation): government schools and hospitals, housing complexes (common supply) and others | ₹608 | ₹7.75 |
| HT IIB: private schools, colleges and hostels | ₹608 | ₹8.25 |
| HT III: shops, malls, offices, hotels, private hospitals and others | ₹608 | ₹9.40 |
| HT IV: construction and temporary supply | ₹608 | ₹13.25 |
- Billable demand. The highest demand your meter recorded in the month, measured over 15 minutes, or 90% of your contracted demand, whichever is higher. If you agreed 100 kVA and the highest reading was 80 kVA, you still pay for 90 kVA. Demand above the contracted demand is charged at double the normal rate.
- Peak hours. Energy used from 6 to 10 am and 6 to 10 pm is billed at 25% extra, from 2022-23 to 2026-27.
- Night hours. Energy used from 10 pm to 5 am gets 5% off.
- Power factor. How much of the power your connection draws is real power, as a number from 0 to 1. Your meter records units (kWh) and kVA-hours (kVAh); the month's average power factor is the kWh divided by the kVAh. It must be at least 0.90. Below that, the bill adds a share of the current consumption charges for every 0.01 below 0.90: 1% per 0.01 if it is 0.85 or more, 1.5% per 0.01 if it is from 0.75 to below 0.85, and 2% per 0.01 below 0.75. At 0.87, 3 steps below 0.90, that is 3%.
Peak and night rates do not apply to HT IIA lift irrigation, HT IV or HT V. The checker covers HT I to IV; HT IIA lift irrigation is subsidised and left out.
HT V, for EV charging stations, has ₹304 per kVA a month and rates by time of day: ₹9.75 from 6 to 9 am and 6 to 10 pm, ₹6.50 from 9 am to 4 pm, and ₹8.10 at other times.
Worked example (HT III). Contracted demand 100 kVA, 80 kVA recorded, 20,000 units, of which 5,000 in peak hours and 3,000 at night. Billable demand is 90 kVA, because 80 kVA is less than 90% of 100 kVA, so the demand charge is 90 x ₹608 = ₹54,720.
Energy is 20,000 x ₹9.40 = ₹1,88,000; peak extra, 25% on 5,000 units, ₹11,750; night reduction, 5% on 3,000 units, ₹1,410. Tariff charges: ₹2,53,060.
Check your own figures in the checker at the top. For an LT shop or office bill, see the commercial bill calculator.
Definitions: TN Electricity Distribution Code, as amended to 31 Mar 2024, regulation 2(1)(n) and (z); TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025, 30 Jun 2025, page 18 and paras 3.1.1.6 to 3.1.1.10; excess demand: TN Electricity Supply Code amendment, 2 Sep 2023, amendment 4 (regulation 5(2)(i)); still listed by TNPDCL tariff page; TNERC tariff orders list, read 30 Oct 2026.
How to pay an HT bill
Pay by the due date on the bill. For any payment above ₹1,000, the Supply Code requires RTGS, NEFT (bank-to-bank transfers) or online transfer; TNPDCL may accept cash only in special cases.
If an HT bill is still unpaid 15 days after its due date, the supply will be disconnected unless TNPDCL gives more time on your application. A late payment charge applies: see TNEB late payment charges.
For NEFT or RTGS, TNPDCL's general procedure for electricity bills (not specific to HT) uses the account TNEB followed by the service connection number, and the amount must match the pending bill exactly or it is not accepted. TNPDCL charges nothing for the transfer. Other ways to pay: TNEB online payment.

Who gets an HT bill
An HT consumer is one TNPDCL supplies at high voltage: 11,000, 22,000 or 33,000 volts, and higher for very large loads. LT supply covers a demand up to 150 kW (kilowatts, the unit LT demand is measured in), and TNPDCL's own pages label HT connections as above 150 kW.
Between 112 and 150 kW, a new consumer can take LT supply only by giving free space for a transformer and paying for the works from it to the meter; otherwise the supply is HT.
To apply for an HT connection or change its load, TNPDCL's HT application login is the place; see also TNEB additional load.

Can an apartment complex get an HT bill?
Yes. Tariff Order 6 of 2025 puts residential colonies, housing complexes and senior citizen communities, and their common supply, under HT IIA, at ₹608 per kVA a month and ₹7.75 a unit. If your association is weighing it, ask TNPDCL how the flats would then be billed.
On LT supply, the Distribution Code gives more than one connection where flats are permanently separated. Common lights, pumps and lifts are billed under LT ID, or LT IE in blocks of up to 3 floors and 10 flats with no lift; either moves to LT V if more than 25% of the built-up area is non-residential. See TNEB tariff 2026.

What people report
"Download the PDF from the HT portal"
Google's AI Overview (read 30 Oct 2026) points to the same TNPDCL HT Consumer Details page and says the bill can be downloaded there as a PDF. A renewable energy website (RenewableNation, 8 Feb 2026) describes logging in with an HT service number and downloading the bill.
We could not check either without an HT number. Try TNPDCL's HT page first, and ask your circle office if the bill is not there.
"Bills come 2 to 3 days after the reading"
The same RenewableNation guide says this. The Supply Code sets the rule we can confirm: an SMS or mail as soon as the bill is sent, and the bill on TNPDCL's website the day it is made. If it has not come, ask your circle office.
TNEB HT bill: questions people ask
How do I check my TNEB HT bill online?
TNPDCL's HT Consumer Details page asks you to pick your district and circle and enter your HT service number. We have not seen what it shows for a service number; if your bill is not there, ask the TNPDCL office for your circle (the area you pick on the HT page).
TNPDCL's Bill Status, e-Invoice and Quick Pay pages do not mention HT. The Supply Code also requires TNPDCL to send an HT consumer an SMS or mail as soon as the bill is sent.
How do I download my HT bill?
Ask the TNPDCL office for your circle (the area you pick on the HT page) where to download it. The Supply Code requires TNPDCL to upload every bill on its website on the day it is generated, with at least the last year of bills and payments. TNPDCL's e-Invoice download page asks for a consumer number and does not say whether it takes HT numbers.
What is billable demand on an HT bill?
The higher of the month's highest demand your meter recorded, in kVA over 15 minutes, or 90% of your contracted demand (the kVA agreed with TNPDCL for your connection). With 100 kVA contracted and 80 kVA recorded, you pay for 90 kVA. Demand above the contracted demand is charged at double the normal rate.
What is the HT demand charge in Tamil Nadu?
₹608 per kVA a month for HT I, IIA, IIB, III and IV, and ₹304 per kVA a month for HT V (EV charging stations), under Tariff Order 6 of 2025. Demand above your contracted demand is charged at double the rate.
Why is my HT bill higher in peak hours?
Energy used from 6 to 10 am and 6 to 10 pm is billed at 25% extra, and energy used from 10 pm to 5 am gets 5% off. Both apply to every HT category except HT IIA lift irrigation, HT IV and HT V.
What is the power factor penalty on an HT bill?
HT connections must keep an average power factor of at least 0.90. Below that, the bill adds a share of the current consumption charges for every 0.01 below 0.90: 1% per 0.01 if it is 0.85 or more, 1.5% per 0.01 if it is from 0.75 to below 0.85, and 2% per 0.01 below 0.75. At 0.87, that is 3%.
How do I pay an HT bill?
By RTGS, NEFT (bank-to-bank transfers) or online transfer for any payment above ₹1,000, by the due date on the bill. If an HT bill is still unpaid 15 days after its due date, the supply will be disconnected unless TNPDCL gives more time on your application.
TNPDCL's general NEFT and RTGS procedure for electricity bills uses the account TNEB followed by the service connection number, and the amount must match the bill exactly.
Who is an HT consumer in Tamil Nadu?
A consumer TNPDCL supplies at high voltage: 11,000, 22,000 or 33,000 volts, or more. Low tension supply goes up to a demand of 150 kW, and TNPDCL labels its HT connections as above 150 kW. A new consumer needing 112 to 150 kW can take LT only by giving free space for a transformer and paying for the works from it to the meter.
