UPPCL smart meter: back to postpaid, no recharge

UPPCL says its smart meters are going back to postpaid, so you should not need to recharge them. UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 says every prepaid smart meter is to be switched from May 2026, with the same meter, and monthly bills start in June 2026. Pay each bill within 15 days; if asked to recharge, call 1912.

Can UPPCL cut my power right now?

DisconnectionNot allowed

On Monday 2 November 2026 at 7:00 pm, supply should not be cut for an unpaid bill, because it is between 6 pm and 8 am.

UPPCL Smart Post-paid Meter FAQ, 27 May 2026 (Hindi), Q37: no disconnection from 6 pm to 8 am, on Sundays, the second Saturday and public holidays; Q7 due date and 7 days; Q34 two hours.

By Raviraj Ramavarapu. From UPPCL's smart meter FAQ of 27 May 2026 and the tariff order of 2 July 2026 from UPERC (the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission). Checked 31 Oct 2026.

In short

  • UPPCL says its smart meters are going back to postpaid. UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 says every prepaid smart meter is to be switched to postpaid from UPPCL's back-end system, its control room, with no visit, with the same meter, from May 2026, and that the bill for May 2026 use comes in June 2026.
  • You should not need to recharge a UPPCL smart meter once it is postpaid. A bill comes every month, you pay it by the due date 15 days after it is issued, and supply can be cut only 7 days after the due date.
  • The security deposit adjusted at the prepaid switch is taken back in four equal parts, on the June to September 2026 bills: ₹600 means ₹150 on each, in UPPCL's example.
  • UPPCL's FAQ says homes can pay dues up to 30 April 2026 in 10 instalments, with the late payment surcharge. After you pay, UPPCL says supply usually comes back within 2 hours.

UPPCL smart meter: prepaid to postpaid

UPPCL's FAQ says all smart meters working in prepaid mode go back to postpaid, so you get a monthly bill and pay monthly, as before. Your meter is not replaced: only the mode changes, from UPPCL's control room. Nobody needs to visit your home or the office.

UPPCL said it would tell each home by SMS or WhatsApp on its registered mobile number. Its FAQ says the bill for May 2026 use comes in June 2026, and that new connections are given postpaid too.

UPPCL smart meter recharge, balance and negative balance: what replaced them

  • Recharge: replaced by a monthly bill. UPPCL's old recharge page was still online on 31 Oct 2026, but UPPCL's FAQ moves every smart meter to postpaid, so pay the bill instead.
  • Balance: a postpaid meter has no balance to run down. UPPCL says the UPPCL Smart app shows your daily use as a graph, your bills and your payments. UPPCL's SMART portal (UPPCL SMART portal) links an app called UPPCL SMART.
  • Negative balance: at UPERC's hearing, consumers complained that supply was cut as soon as the prepaid balance went negative. With a postpaid meter, an unpaid bill follows the normal timeline below.

To see or download the monthly bill, use UPPCL bill check. To check whether its amount is right, put the units into the UPPCL bill calculator.

Why your bill had an extra security amount

When homes moved to prepaid, their security deposit was adjusted against dues or added to their balance. Now UPPCL takes it back in four equal parts, added automatically to the June 2026 bill (issued in July 2026) and the next three monthly bills.

UPPCL's example: a ₹600 deposit on a ₹2,000 monthly bill adds ₹150 to each bill for June, July, August and September.

Old dues in instalments

Homes can pay dues up to 30 April 2026 in 10 instalments, with the late payment surcharge. Other categories get 3 instalments: 40%, 30% and 30%. UPPCL points out that paying in one go avoids further surcharge.

When your power can be cut, and when it must come back

  • Due date: 15 days after the bill is issued. After that, 7 more days before the temporary disconnection date.
  • No cuts: from 6 pm to 8 am, on Sundays, on the second Saturday of the month and on public holidays. The box at the top checks a date and time for you.
  • After you pay: UPPCL says supply usually comes back within 2 hours. If it does not, complain on 1912.
  • Money gone, bill not updated: UPPCL says within 24 to 48 hours the amount is either taken off your dues or refunded. If not, complain on 1912 with the transaction ID or receipt number.
  • Every way to pay: see UPPCL bill payment.

For smart prepaid meters, UPERC said in June 2026 that reconnection after a payment or recharge must be immediate or take a few minutes, and that more than two hours breaks its Standards of Performance rules. It fined UPPCL ₹7,18,000 for such delays.

Does a UPPCL smart meter run fast?

UPPCL says no: its FAQ says smart meters meet the same Indian Standard accuracy as electronic meters. About 83 lakh smart meters have been installed, with about 5.22 lakh old meters fitted alongside as check meters. A four-member committee formed on 12 April 2026, including an IIT Kanpur professor, found them all within the standards.

UPERC's order puts the count at more than 90 lakh smart meters and has told the power companies to report accuracy tests on 5% of them. If you doubt your meter, ask for a meter test at your division or sub-division office, on www.uppcl.org or on 1912. If you are still not satisfied, you can go to the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum (CGRF).

Why the bill jumped after the smart meter

  • Units billed late: units not billed on time are added to a later bill, so one bill can be large.
  • Old readings: UPPCL says a higher bill after a smart meter usually means the old meter's estimated or wrong readings billed too little before.
  • Charges without use: the fixed charge on your load and electricity duty are billed even in a month you used little, and the monthly fuel surcharge (FPPAS) adds to or takes off a share of the fixed and energy charges.

Rates and each month's fuel surcharge are in UPPCL tariff 2026.

Smart meter cost, solar homes and old keypad meters

  • Cost: replacing your old meter with a smart meter is free. New connections pay the smart meter cost UPERC has fixed (see Jhatpat connection charges). Never pay cash to any worker or agency.
  • Rooftop solar: when the net meter is replaced, the import and export readings must be written on the meter sealing certificate (the paper the worker gives you when the meter is changed), so your carried-forward units are kept. Smart meters work with net metering.
  • Old keypad prepaid meter: the balance left on it must be written on the sealing certificate and is credited to your postpaid account.
  • At installation: see the worker's ID, give your correct mobile number, take the sealing certificate, and see the old meter's final reading noted in front of you.

Can you choose prepaid?

Two official documents say different things. UPERC's tariff order of 2 July 2026 records the Commission's letter of May 2026: the law and the rules require smart meters in both modes, and "the choice of selection of the mode lies with the consumer". UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 switches all prepaid smart meters to postpaid.

The tariff order still gives prepaid meters a 2% discount on the rate (the fixed and energy charges) and a ₹10 charge for each token. We have not seen an UPPCL notice inviting homes to choose prepaid again.

Smart meter complaints and fake messages

Complain on 1912, on www.uppcl.org, in the UPPCL Smart app, on your power company's WhatsApp chatbot (numbers in UPPCL bill check), or at your division or sub-division office. UPPCL advises 1912, the chatbot, the website or the app, because you get a complaint number you can track.

UPPCL says its payment SMS links come only from the senders UPPCLT and UPPCLA. Before paying from a link, check the address is https://consumer.uppcl.org/wss/pay_bill_home, as UPPCL's FAQ says.

What some pages say, and what UPPCL says

"Recharge your UPPCL smart meter here."

Recharge sellers still rank for it. UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 moves every prepaid smart meter to postpaid, so homes pay a monthly bill.

"Smart meters run fast."

A common complaint, also raised at UPERC's hearing. UPPCL says its check meters and a committee found them within standards; UPERC has asked for the accuracy test reports.

Questions people ask

Is my UPPCL smart meter prepaid or postpaid now?

It is meant to be postpaid. UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 says all smart meters working in prepaid mode are to be switched to postpaid, from the control room, with the same meter. It says the bill for May 2026 use comes in June 2026, with a bill every month after that.

Do I still need to recharge my UPPCL smart meter?

No, not once your meter is on postpaid: you get a monthly bill and pay it by the due date, 15 days after the bill is issued. If you are still asked to recharge, call 1912. To see the bill, follow UPPCL bill check.

How do I check my UPPCL smart meter balance now?

A postpaid meter has no balance. UPPCL says its smart meters are being switched to postpaid, and that the UPPCL Smart app shows your daily use as a graph, your bills and your payments. Once yours is postpaid, an unpaid bill follows the due date and the 7 days after it; if your meter still shows a balance or asks for a recharge, call 1912.

Smart meter recharge kaise kare?

Ab recharge nahi karna hai. UPPCL ke FAQ (27 May 2026) ke hisaab se sab smart meter May 2026 se postpaid ho rahe hain: har mahine bill aata hai, aur bill aane ke 15 din ke andar bharna hota hai.

Why is there an extra security amount on my UPPCL bill?

When meters went prepaid, the security deposit was adjusted. Now it is taken back in four equal parts, on the June 2026 bill (issued in July) and the next three bills. In UPPCL's example, a ₹600 deposit adds ₹150 to each of those four bills.

How soon is power restored after I pay?

UPPCL's FAQ says usually within 2 hours of a successful payment; if not, complain on 1912. UPERC has said that for smart prepaid meters, reconnection after a payment or recharge should be immediate, and that more than two hours breaks its rules.

Does a smart meter run fast?

UPPCL says no: its smart meters meet the same Indian Standard accuracy as electronic meters, and a committee formed in April 2026 found them within the standards. If you still doubt yours, ask for a meter test at your division or sub-division office, on www.uppcl.org or on 1912.

Do I have to pay for a UPPCL smart meter?

Not if it replaces your old meter: UPPCL says that is free. New connections pay the smart meter cost UPERC has fixed. Never pay cash to any worker for a smart meter.

Can I choose a prepaid smart meter?

UPERC wrote in its 2 July 2026 order that the choice of postpaid or prepaid lies with the consumer. UPPCL's FAQ of 27 May 2026 moves all prepaid smart meters to postpaid. We have not seen an UPPCL notice on choosing prepaid again.
